Medieval!

This would sound awesome in a medieval game or film. You're a favorite to win this contest IMO. Cheers!

popraz responds:

Honestly, I had my doubts about this song, don't know about winning the contest, but I'm honestly happy to see such a positive reaction. Thank you and good luck at the contest.

Hey!

And just when I thuoght you had stopped submitting this type of material to NG forever! Way to go! :D

Sorta reminds me of...

Jonathan Davis. lol Heavy metal screamer, AND a bagpipe player as well. lol Great entry mate! :D

Pure-Metal-UTA responds:

When I was in grade 7, one of my sister's friends offered me to play in their Korn cover band speaking of Jon Davis.
Thanks for the review! Wish me luck in RaC!

Good Work Sir!

Good work Sir!

The dissonance and intentional overbearing drum and percussion lines convey the sense that this is more of a battle piece rather than a "theme". Theme would suggest more of a distinctive melody, which is hardly touched upon in this piece. Also, the string and drums are foremost, and get the most prominence. Although a choir is featured, they are slightly drowned out by the drum-lines, particularly the sticks and clacks. I thought the horns were well mixed, I just wished you used more variety, perhaps more trombone and tuba blasts.

I know I'm being picky, but I really like this song. Awesome work sir! Good luck with NADM!

:D

Gravey responds:

Wow! Such praise from someone whom I respect quite a deal as a composer. You make some valid points about how this isn't exactly a "theme." But I really don't feel like labeling my orchestral music in terms of a real name. So out of the options I thoguht up of I liked the idea of the recurring theme "Orchestral Theme" the best. Thus why I labeled this that way.

The choir was a bit drowned out, totally correct there. It was my first real go around with the EastWest software, so I'm still trying to get the kinks out of the system. Will be a long road for sure, but I'm definitely excited about it.

Thanks for the review. Much appreciated.

Way to go!

I like your use of voice here to accompany the simple yet beautiful string theme. I wish to hear more like this! :D

Jessismith responds:

Thanks Andy! I will most certainly make more like this. And I'm glad you like it. That means a lot coming from one of my favorite composers ever. :)

Very good!

What sample pack are you using? Sounds like Symphobia ?

Tomppaah responds:

Yeah, it's Symphobia and/or EWQL Orchestral.

Thanks for the vote :)

Electronica

This isn't classical music, but rather falls into the sub genre that could be called "electronic/classical", evoking Craig Armstrong, E.S. Posthumus, Propellorheads (a couple of their well-known songs), or even Juno Reactor vs. Don Davis.

Try the main string melody at a slower tempo, and expunge the drum & bass beat completely. Then try adding brass and woodwind instrument sections.

It takes a lot of guts to try a new genre that you haven't done before. Keep up the good effort! :D

Pathos...

This evokes feelings hugely reminiscent of pathos. The tragic but beautiful irony of an angel dying always depicts the most ultimate of sacrifices... Good work Chuck!

MaestroRage responds:

thanks! And again for the review. I love the images of angels dying for that exact reason.

Good Improv

This is good for improv. If anything, many times, improvs sound better than a written peice. Good work. I lok forward to hearing more improvs from you.

Nice balance

Nice balance of piano, strings and woodwinds. it sounds almost Celtic. Hmm try adding 2.0db of hall reverb. I tried it live while listening to your song and I think it makes it sound more ambient and relaxing. :D Cheers!

ChrisisD responds:

Thanks for the review! Indeed, the flute especially could use more reverb, don't know if that would make the piano sound any better though. Greets!
